An overview of UPI

Unified Payment Interface (UPI) is a payment system launched by the NPCI for immediate money transfers with 24 x 7, 365 days availability. Instead of sharing account details, you will be sharing a virtual ID which is relatively secure. Since no card details are provided, your financial data is also relative secure.

What Is RRN in UPI?

Retrieval Reference Number (RRN) is a unique 12-digit number generated to record each transaction; it is generated by the initiating payment service provider (PSP) and can be used to identify a particular transaction.

Here is the RRN construct in detail—YDDDSSSSSSSS—where:

  • Y represents the year
  • DDD represents the Julian day
  • SSSSSSSS represents the System Trace Audit Number (STAN) number

*Julian day is the number of the day of a given year. For example, 6th February 2023 will be written as 037 in the RRN number as it the 37th day of the year 2023.

*STAN is a number generated by the bank to identify a transaction.

Significance of RRN Number

As mentioned earlier, the RRN number can help in checking the status of a UPI transaction. It plays an important role in resolving queries and tracking refunds, among other things. Additionally, keeping track of transactions is important for merchants that accept UPI payments as it can help them improvise their business plans and verify purchases made by customers.

In some cases, the payment can be debited from the payer’s account but not received by the payee. The RRN number can help with reporting a problem and tracking the money. For example, if your UPI ID was used to send money to someone in a deceitful manner, you will be required to share the RRN number with the concerned authorities to raise a formal request for investigating the matter.
